Title: THE GREATEST EXPLORERS (Unit 10)

Level: Third cycle (Y6)

Topic:  Explorers of the American continent.


Didactic main aim: To extend the pupils’ communicative competence by learning the most relevant social and cultural aspects of the English speaking countries studying Irish geography and traditions.

Vocabulary: continent, explorer, inhabitant, ancestor, settlement, colony, Vikings, Atlantic ocean, Europe, America, Far East, Spain, Japan, India, Bering Strait... // discover, sail... // European, Indian, native, much larger than...

Linguistic structures: Who discovered America? // Was Columbus the first who to discover America? // The first inhabitants of America crossed the Bering Straight 40,000 years ago. // in the 10th century AD Vikings from Scandinavia built settlements in Newfoundland.

Socio-cultural aspects: The students will learn the most relevant aspects of the World Geography and History.

Resources: Written and oral descriptions, internet links, the written lyrics of the song of this unit, and videos.

Timing: 7 sessions (45 minutes each one).
